The original building was constructed in the beginning of the XIII century by the Lords of Lichtenberg. On a hill overlooking the village, today this landmark incorporates contemporary spaces home to cultural activities and the Centre for Heritage Interpretation.
The Lichtenberg family was one of the most powerful families of lower Alsace. It was in 1480 when the last member of direct lineage died, Jacques le Barbu (Bearded Jacques). Cerca 1580, the Count heir Phillip IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg asked Daniel Specklin, an architect from Strasbourg known for his forts, to refurbish his castle into a fortress. He then adapted the defence system and used a new weapon at that time: the canon.
A fascinating history is waiting to be explored in following the tri-lingual tour enlivened with stories of the castle residents of the past.
