Along the Alsace Wine Route, legendary birthplace of Sainte-Odile (the Patron Saint of Alsace), Obernai is one of the “Plus Beaux Détours de France”.
Once a major crossroad of the Roman Route, then known as the royal villa Merovingian, “Ehenheim”, it was first mentioned in 778. The Regency and Louis XV styles in this town come together in harmony among Medieval and Renaissance buildings beautifully restored. The fortified wall located in the “vieille ville” (the old part of the town) stretches 1.400 metres long, and was fit with 20 or so towers and 4 gates. The large interior yard serves today as a lovely promenade.
The Roman House, built cerca 1240, was the property of the Rathsamhausen family. Though remodelled during the Renaissance, this house conserved its gables from the era.
In the forest of Obernai, don’t miss the Kagenfels Castle, erected in 1262, which is currently undergoing restoration.
